A meridian sundial indicates solar noon, which occurs when the sun
reaches its highest elevation of the day, passing through true South and
the local meridian. The idea can be extended to create a sundial
that indicates local civil noon. Noon when
daylight savings time is in effect can also be indicated. Click here to view
a meridian sundial I made that has these features and to see some of my
other sundials :

An analemmatic sundial is a horizontal sundial with a gnomon located at a date-dependent position. The gnomon is often a person who stands at a date mark and reads the time by sighting in the direction of his or her shadow.
